On Memorial Day 2021 the Schuylkill Center kicked off the construction of the outdoor art installation Al Mudhif – A Confluence by artists Sarah Kavage and Yaroub Al-Obaidi with the support of U.S. veterans, Iraqi immigrants and the public. Al Mudhif - Arabic for guesthouse - is a traditional Iraqi ceremonial house which is one of the first of such structures in North America. Entirely built out of the invasive wetland reed phragmites, the installation provides a welcoming space for intercultural encounter, healing and belonging while offering a critical perspective on global migration of plants and people. The kick-off ceremony featured a land acknowledgment by the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Tribal Nation and a dedication by Chaplain Christopher Antal (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs). -Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education
